If you are a fan of Young House Love (really, who isn't?) you have probably seen this drum shade solution before. If you haven't, it essentially is just using a cheap (or preexisting) set of guts from a ceiling mount fixture used to hold a drum shade via a little nut-screwed-onto-bolt action.
Here is our little twist on their fabulous idea. This is renter friendly, which is amazing!
The Goods
Shade: $12 from TJMaxx/Homegoods, or check out Target or Walmart.
Paint: totally already had it. Translation = zero monies, bro.
Guts: $5.99 ugly glass flush mount fixture from Home Depot.
I painted the shade in a pattern and colors inspired by home decor and clothing textiles from Anthropologie. Consider using a stencil or covering it in fabric. Or, just spray paint the whole thing.
You could also leave it the hell alone. I hear that looks nice and I probably would have done it myself if I didn't have this totally medically legitimate disease where I begin to twitch unless I add some kind of artistic ~flair~ to everything I can get my bedazzling/painting/hot-glueing hands on. Like I said, totally medically legitimate.
The shade, like most, is meant to sit on top of the screw-looking bolt (engineer husband says the word for this is "threaded") at the top of a lamp, with the finnial like nut screwing down over it to keep it in place. The $5.99 fixture we bought has the same components, only upside down and meant to hold on the glass shade. We simply put the new shade on in the glass one's place, then screwed the nut on. I intend to cover the bottom soon to conceal the lightbulbs.
If the bar on the fixture isnt long enough to reach the washer/bolt on the shade (a problem we encountered), there are extenders that are simply threaded bolts that look identical to what is already there, and you connect it to the existing bolt with a nut.
